Autoimmune - initiating cause unknown
Non-specific inflammation
Limited to mucosa and submucosa
confined to colon and rectum
inflamed area confluent
lesions in the crypts of Lieberkuhn in the basal mucosal layer
lesions may become necrotic and ulcerative
Pinpoint mucosal hemorrhage leads to crypt abcesses
bowel wall thickens after repeated events
S&S
Remission and exacerbation
diarrhea
fecal incontinence
weight loss
anorexia
fatigue
blood/ mucus in stool
toxicity
fever

F&E imbalance
