A Lesson on Holidays and Their Significance
Pre-Assessment for Differentiation
Pre-Assessment
Strategy 1: Teacher-prepared tests
Strategy 2: Kahoot
Strategy 3: entry ticket
Differentiation
Group 2
Group 2 consists of students who have some knowledge about the topic but need to develop higher order thinking skills. They will be paired up and will use the class iPads to complete activities that challenge them to further understand the class material
Example Activity: Students will watch videos that introduce the origin of each holiday using stories, and they will work in pairs to answer questions regarding key information in the videos. After completing the worksheet, they will choose one holiday story to do a story board.
Group 3
Group 3 consists of students who have limited knowledge about the topic, including ELL students and students who may have special needs. They will join the teacher at the review station, where the teacher uses visuals, flashcards, or worksheets to re-teach and help students review the class material. ELL students will be allowed to use dictionaries and given more simplified instructions. Students who may have special needs will be given short breaks in between activities and will be given more time to complete the worksheets.
The teacher will ask students to recite the four major Chinese holidays and have the students complete a worksheet on their pronunciation and writing. The teacher will then pair students up to practice simple Chinese conversations.
Group 1
Group 1 consists of students who answered most of the pre-assessment questions correctly. The teacher will provide supplementary materials to challenge them to dig deeper and practice critical thinking skills.
Example Activity: Students will work in pairs or groups to complete a Jigsaw reading activity and use a Venn diagram to reveal a comparison of similar holidays in the U.S. to holidays in China.
Progress Tracking and Monitoring
Formative assessment
To track student learning progress, the teacher will use multiple formative assessment strategies such as thumbs up thumbs down, fist to five, and think-pair-share.
Summative assessment
Test/quiz: students will complete a standardized unit test and the test scores will be documented and shared with parents.
Project: Students will research and complete a Chinese holiday report. In reference to each holiday, the
students will cut and paste appropriate pictures and write a short explanation for each holiday
