ISTE STANDARDS FOR EDUCATORS
Standard 6: Facilitator
Educators facilitate learning with technology to support student achievement of the ISTE Standards for Students. Educators:
This standard requires educators
to create an environment where students take initiative in their online learning (6.a). The educator also needs to manager the students usage of technology (6.b) and create challenges that encourage students to both think creatively and inspire computational thinking (6.d). This requires teachers to tailor lesson plans around these concepts which will inherently impact the educators preparation time.
Technology skills needed:
Educators will need basic technology literacy. They will also need an advanced understanding of the applications their students are using's. This requires skills in communication applications, teaching applications, word processing applications, and presentation applications.
Standard 1:Learner
Educators continually improve their practice by learning from and with others and exploring proven and promising practices that leverage technology to improve student learning
This standard requires
Educators to stay up to date on research (1.c) and learn how to apply new techniques made possible by Technology(1.a). This standards impacts educators preparation because the educator must devote an allotted amount of time to research and reflect on the most current educational resources available to them.
Technology skills needed:
To be a learner teachers should have basic technology literacy. They will need to be able to communicate effectively with others through technology. They should also be able to use programs for designing curriculum.
Standard 2 : Leader
Educators seek out opportunities for leadership to support student empowerment and success and to improve teaching and learning. Educators.
This standard requires
Educators to advocate for new technology opportunities for their students (2.b) and share their technology knowledge with their colleagues to help improve the quality of education for the school (2.c). This impacts a teachers preparation because it requires them to be proactive in helping the school innovate for future classes and lessons.
Technology skills needed:
To be a leader an educator needs basic technology literacy. The skills that will prove most beneficial for this standard included online communication and technology based presentation.
Standard 4:Collaborator
Educators dedicate time to collaborate with both colleagues and students to improve practice, discover and share resources and ideas, and solve problems. Educators:
This standard requires
educators to collaborate with teams, experts, and their students to improve their technology knowledge and troubleshoot problems as they arise. This standard effects teacher preparation because educators have to devote personal development time to these collaborations.
Technology skills needed:
Beyond basic technology literacy the educator will need literacy in communication applications. The educator should also be proficient in utilizing search engines and deciphering available online resources.
Standard 3 : Citizen
Educators inspire students to positively contribute to and responsibly participate in the digital world. Educators
This standard requires
educators to mentor their students in ethical online behavior ( 3.C). It also requires educators two promote online safety and personal identity protection (3.D). These two parts of this standard require a teacher to prepare lessons tailored to these topics, which are vital for students ability to function in our technology based society.
Technology skills needed:
Educators who achieve this standard will need basic technology literacy. However they will also benefit from literacy in communication applications, including social media. They will also need to be literate in lesson preparation applications and have an understanding of teaching applications that may be useful to educating students on these topics.
Standard 5 : Designer
Educators design authentic, learner-driven activities and environments that recognize and accommodate learner variability. Educators:
This standard requires educators
to create learning experiences that are both uniquely tailored to the learner and promote independent learning ( 5.a) It also requires the educator to design lessons that are engaging ( 5.c). designing new lessons around technology can be a time consuming process and effect the amount of preparation a teacher must plan for.
Technology skills required:
This standard requires more than just basic literacy. An educator who can design authentic learning activities and accommodate different types of learners must have a great grasp of technology. They should be able to successfully research using the internet. They should also be proficient in teaching applications, lesson planning applications, and presentation applications.
Standard 7 Analyst
Educators understand and use data to drive their instruction and support students in achieving their learning goals. Educators:
This standard requires
Educators to provide alternate ways for students to show competency through the use of technology (7.A). It also requires that teachers design a variety of technology based assessments and use the assessment data to guide progress and communicate with students, parents, and administrators ( 7.b,7.c). The design of new assessments will take additional preparation on the educators part, It may also take preparation time to evaluate the data the assessments provide and learn how to utilize it for the students benefit.
Technology skills needed
:
Educators who achieve the standard of analysts should not only be literate in technology but also have an advanced understanding of the use of online research and search engines. They should also be able to use word processors and presentation applications to present there findings after completeing their research. Lastly they should be able to apply this information to lesson plan applications and presentation software to make use of it for their students.
