Setting Objectives and Providing Feedback
Set learning objectives that are specific but not restrivtive
What is a learning objective?
what students should know, understand, or be able to do as a result of completing the learning activity or assignment
they should be stated in terms of what the students are suppose to learn, not what the activity or assignment they are expected to complete.
Teachers should "unpack" the standards to be able to make their benchmarks more specifc.
What is a benchmark?
provides detail about what students will be able to do and for what purpose.
Communicate the learning obejctives to students and parents
should state the learning objectives in student-friendly terms, so they can clearly understand what they should be able to do. It also helps them to more clearly focus on what we want them to learn.
Communicating to parents helps them to be engaged in their student's learning.
This also helps parents to ask their kids specific questions about their learning to support them at home.
By communicating to parents, it also shows that you value their involvement.
Connect the learning obejctives to previous and future learning.
Show students how what they are learning connects to what they have already learned.
This helps student to gain a bigger picture and it may help them to realize why what they are learning matters. It gives them a different perspective.
Show students how what they are learning is going to connect to future learning objectives.
Engage students in setting personal learning objectives
Can increase motivation for students because it makes them more involved.
Give students a template so they can create their own learning objectives.
Provide feedback that addresses what is correct and elaborates on what students need to do next.
Help students know where they have fallen short
feedback should also help students know how close they were to hitting the mark. How much more do they need to do in order to meet the standard?
Provide feedback apropriately in time to meet students' needs
if it helps students with a new task, quick feedback would be benefical.
Delayed feedback could help high-performing students because they will keep working and thinking.
