Cells
Both plant and animal cells have a nucleus, cytoplasm, and cell membrane.
-
Cells build up tissue. Tissue builds organs, and organs build up organ systems. These organ systems help your body perform daily functions.
-
Animals and plants are made up of many cells. They are multicellular. An organism made up of one cell is a unicellular organism. Cells help carry out bodily functions, and they need to be able to transport substances in order to do this.
Enzymes
-
They fit with a specific substrate using a lock and key mechanism. The substrate binds to the enzyme's active site where a reaction will take place.
-
They are involved in many biological activities.
Transporting substances
Osmosis is when water particles move down a concentration gradient with no energy through a partially permeable membrane.
Gas particles can be transferred through the air via diffusion. Diffusion is when particles move down a concentration gradient with no energy.
Active transport is when particles move up a concentration gradient using energy. This can be used to transport substances.
Active transport can be used to help carry substances through the body and into/out of cells. For example, oxygen can be carried from the lungs to individual cells. Transporting substances is a very important process in our body. Enzymes can help speed up these processes too.
