S6. Orientation and Induction
Induction is the process designed to acquaint the newly employed teacher with the community, the school district, the school, the program, and their colleagues.
Induction Programs, are designed to include the information given during orientation as well as provide collegial connections; instructional support; and acculturation to the community, school, and classroom throughout at least the first year as a new employee.
Principal's Role in the Induction Program
Time should be made available to hold several shorter conferences. It is appropriate for the principal to introduce the staff handbook at this time.
The principal conducts the first staff meeting and reviews the handbook, containing schedules. building policies, discipline procedures, and so on.

Six Common Problems Facing the Beginning Teacher
Shock of the familiar: teachers have to meet many unexpected demands.
Students: new teachers are unfamiliar and discouraged by the reality of students; attitudes and behaviors that are incongruent with the teachers' personal experiences and views of school culture.

Fellow teachers: Neglect and social differences stemming from ready developed social groups is another source of isolation.

Definition Phase
The establishment of a Teacher District-wide Committee. Its first task is to determine the goals for the induction program. Suggested goals include: enhancement of teacher competence, reduction of teacher attrition, improvement of students' instruction, and increased organizational strength for the school.
Development Phase
The final written proposal includes the goals and objectives of the induction program, an outline of possible activities, and a methods of evaluation.
Orientation Phase
Is the initial part of the comprehensive program. The school has an opportunity to make a favorable first impression on the new employee during the orientation session.
Mentor Program
For mentoring to meet its goal, it is important for mentors to open their classrooms to new teachers and assists new teachers in gaining experience through professional contacts in the school and in the broader educational community.
Mentors serve as coaches, observing and providing feedback, while demonstrating effective techniques and strategies.
Operation Phase
During the first month of school, the principal should monitor the performance of the beginning teacher carefully by visiting the teacher's classroom and initiating regular discussions with the new teacher.
Evaluation Phase
Before the end of the school year, both the district and the building induction programs need to be evaluated. All beginning teachers need to be surveyed regarding their impressions of the components of the induction program.
