Pre-Assessment
: Students will be given KWL charts and asked to fill out the first two columns, "What I Know" and "What I Want to Know," about description words about food. Students can write, draw pictures, or verbalize to communicate their knowledge.
High-Achievers
Students will be asked to research and write a recipe to make their favourite meal. They will describe the flavour of each ingredient and each step to making the meal.
Students will be paired up to collaborate on a poster (on paper or online) that depicts the steps to making one of their favourite meals and each ingredient.
Students will be asked to complete the third column, "What I Learned," on their KWL charts. Students can write, draw pictures, or verbalize to communicate their knowledge.
Some Knowledge, Need to Develop Higher Order Thinking Skills
Students will be given pictures of different meals and be asked to describe them each in a few sentences. They will use the five senses in each of their descriptions.
Students will be paired up and peer review each others' work. Students will be asked to add at least one descriptive word for each picture of their partner's description.

Limited Knowledge

Students will be given 10 common description words for food and pictures showing each description. (Ex. "spicy" with a picture like
this
) Students will be asked to translate each word into their native language for maximum understanding.
Students will then be asked to write or draw a food that matches each description word.

Special Needs
Physical Disability
Students will be provided with appropriate accommodations for their particular disability.
Blind students would be provided headphones to listen to description words for food, then asked to describe one of their favourite meals verbally to the teacher.

Deaf students would be provided pictures and animation of each description word and be asked to write about their favourite meal using the words provided.

Learning Disability
Students will be provided with appropriate accommodations, such as an aid, to fit their needs.
Students will be provided with description words for food, pictures of food that has that characteristic, and a picture showing the description. Students will be asked to match the two pictures to the correct description word. (Ex. "spicy" would be matched to a picture like
this
and a picture of a chili pepper)
