Aims and Objectives
Course aims
1.An understanding of the development and use of material studies in the interpretation of peoples and societies.
An awareness of current techniques appropriate to the study of a range of materials
Basic observation and recording skills of characteristic traits for a range of materials
An awareness of the role and practice of experimental archaeology
An introduction to the conservation of archaeological materials.
How can I meet different elements of the course aims in the lecture?
New topics to add
Arnold and distance of temper retrieval
Perhaps emphasise restraints to collection and use of certain resources?
Is this really necessary? Perhaps use it to emphasise role of ethnoarchaeology?
Constant balance between a level general enough to draw conclusions, and a level detailed enough to acknowledge diversity inherent in present and past societies
Would be good to more explicitly acknowledge the ceramic ethnography
Other things
Roman tile tombs
Gussage All Saints moulds
CBM kilns
Clay pipes?
SE Europe Neolithic ceramic figurines
New online activities
Padlet
How is this used effectively?
Videos? Clips?
Actually show them ceramics on screen?
As in ones that I have stored here?
Scan through previous lectures to see what techniques others have used
Kate with glass
She didn't use anything
John Gale with lithics
At the end he showed a few artefacts used in flint knapping, e.g. handaxes, hammers, flakes
Little use of the chat until the very end, and no interactive use of online tools
Hayden with metals
artefact quiz
problem with low participation and poor image quality
take photos prior to session?
mentimeter
Got them to mindmap associations with metals, but problems getting it to run smoothly
Perhaps use it to get them to mindmap ceramic types?
Ask them what ceramic items they have in front of them at present => continuing importance of ceramics
Great reason they should be studied!
