- - - - Why do plants an animals select certain prey over others?
        
        Three main factors are initially important in a predators choice
        
        First- Is the probability that a particular prey individual will be encountered. Rare species will be consumed less than abundant ones and those that are cryptic due to coloration or smaller size may escape detection
        
        Second - Is the decision by the predator to attack an individual once it has been encountered. Examples: Is it poisonous or spiny? To small or low in nutrients?
        
        Third - Is the probability that an attacked prey item will be successfully eaten. Example: Is a fruit that is difficult to crack open one that can be digested?
  - - - One plant species competes against other plant species for light, water, and minerals along with many other things

        The spider crab and the algae
        
        The bacteria and the human
        
        The bee and the flower
  - - - Examples:
        
        Trees provide sites where birds can nest, which helps the birds but does not affect the tree.
  - - - The nurse plant may provide shade camouflage or protection to the seedlings of the second plant
- - - - The relationship between the size of an area and the number of species present, often a small area has fewer species than does a larger one
    - - In community ecology a plot of the numbers of species in a region into various abundance classes, a common result is that a few species are extremely common the rest are each rather rare

        Biome
        
        Large regions are characterized by the dominant plants present, which in turn are influenced by climate.
        Examples: biomes temperate grassland, temperate rainforest, tropical rainforest, desert, and salt marsh.
        
        Biogeographical region
        
        An extremely large region that usually coincides with a continent or other very large bounded by geological or climatic barrier to migration. The barriers, such as oceans, mountains, or deserts, prevent the dispersal of most organisms from one region to another
        
        Area larger than a few square kilometers but much less than a continent. Region usually encompasses all members of many species, and the processes of speciation and extincion are important
- - - - Is a habitat that can support a population of a particular spices indefinitely. Seeds, spores, or other propagules become dissed from sources habitats to pooper sink habitats
    - - Is a poor habitat that cannot support a population of a particular species indefinitely. The spices is maintained only by migration from nearby richer habitats
    - - Is one that survives by colonizing new patches, flourishing temporarily and then colonizing more patches before it dies out in old ones.
