The total amount of money a country earns divided amongst its population
It is a bad way of judging how developed a country is because it is an average. It does not show the how rich the richest and how poor the poorest people are in a country.
Birth rate
Babies born per 1000 of a population. Suggests how developed a country is, higher birth rate indicates more children are needed for labour, in stage 1 or 2 of the DTM. Low birth rates are associated with developed countries who do not rely on children to work on farms, and have access to contraception.
Death rate
Deaths per 1000 of a population. High death rate suggests a country has poor healthcare and is less developed. Low death rates suggests a richer country with good healthcare.
Infant mortality
Number of babies that die before 1st birthday per 1000 of population. A low infant mortality rate suggests that the country has good healthcare.
Life expectancy
Average age a person is expected to live to in a country. The higher the number the better quality of healthcare in a country.
Pop per Doc
Amount of people per doctor. Lower pop per doc means a country is generally wealthier and can afford more medical services.
Literacy rate.
Percentage of a population that is literate (can read and write). If a very large percentage of a population is literate that means the countries is wealthy and able to provide an education system.
Access to safe water
Percentage of a population that has access to safe drinking water. A higher percentage indicates a country is more developed and has the infrastructure to provide its population with clean water.
Intermediate technology
Technology suited for use in developing countries, it is low skill, low cost and only needs local people.
Bike pump, made from a bicycle wheel and rope, a very cheap way of getting clean water to remote communities.
Composting toilet. A clean toilet that has a collection area below it to collect faeces and turns it into compost to be used on crops.
