Ch. 25 Populations and Ecosystems, Crosslink Connection: In a log that…
-
Crosslink Connection: In a log that contains fungus, the major parts of the fungal body are inside the log digesting it and causing it to decompose. Without the fungi and bacteria, the carbon compounds would remain trapped in the log for thousands of years.
Crosslink Connections: Many oceanic islands are composed of rocks that break down into a soil that is full of minerals. Sea birds eat fish then defecate on the island leaving mineral rich guano. This fertilizer allows plants to flourish on the island, and the minerals are washed back into the ocean enriching growth of algae and fish completing the cycle.
Crosslink: Connections: Most plants of disturbed habitats, such as dune plants are r-selected species. They can germinate, grow quickly, and produce many seeds. They can also grow and reproduce abundantly because almost no energy or mineral resources are spent on drought adaptations or anti herbivore defenses. Because of periodic storms, freshly exposed, highly disturbed sand dunes are always ready for invasion.
