Hazardous earth
Key terms
-
Weather- is short-term day-to-day changes in things like temperature, wind, cloud cover and rainfall
Climate- is the average of these weather conditions, measured over 30 years
Glacials- cold periods, some of these cold periods become ice ages.
-
-
Pleistocene- The last cold period which ended 10,000 years ago
Holocene- The warm period from 10,00 years ago to now
-
Human activity
The greenhouse effect
The natural greenhouse effect is essential for keeping our plant warm. The temperature of the earth is a balance between the heat it gets from the sun and the heat it loses to space
Gases in the atmosphere naturally act like an insulating layer- they let short-wave radiation in, but trap long-wave radiation, helping to keep the earth at the right temperature
-
-
Trees absorb and store CO2. When land is deforested it reduces the absorption of CO2, which leaves more CO2 in the atmosphere
CO2 is released into the atmosphere when fossil fuels like coal, oil and natural gases are burnt

Natural climate change

-
Sunspots
If the sun's surface has more black spots, then the sun is more active than usual therefore increasing earth's temperature
Asteroid collisions
-
These particles prevent the sun's energy from reaching the earth's surface so global temperature decreases
