Themes
Freedom
Freedom is present in the story when we see George and Lennie talking about how they want their own piece of land. They want to grow and harvest their own produce, they want to live off of their own work. They didn't want to work for someone else.
Stereotypes
Stereotypes are very present with many different characters. The biggest examples would be Curley's wife and Lennie. Everybody on the ranch has this stereotype that Curley's wife is a tramp and tries to get men in trouble. This is not true she is just polite and friendly, she wants to talk to other people since her own husband never gives her attention. The stereotype everyone has about Lennie is that he is very dumb, this is not the case exactly. He has his own problems that make him think differently than other adults. Due to that, he is unable to take care of himself and has to depend on George because George is smarter. Since George is the one that always talks for both of them everyone just listens to how George says that Lennie isn't bright.
Discrimination
We can see discrimination in the book with Lennie and Candy. We can see discrimination with Lennie when near the beginning of the story George told Lennie to not talk when they met with their new boss since the boss would notice Lennie and his uniqueness and decide to fire him. Candy is discriminated because he doesn't have a hand, he lost it when he was working on the ranch and now they only keep him there as a way to repent to his accident. He fears that they will soon fire him since he can't do much work and he is now old.
Racism
Racism is present with the character Crooks. He is separated from the rest of the workers on the ranch and lives next to the stables. He isn't allowed to live in the bumhouse with the others due to his color of skin. He can't do most things with other people since they don't want him near them because he is black. For that reason, he is always lonely and wants someone to talk to although everybody stays away.
