His lack of faith causes tension within his family, which results in him being disliked, which also contributes to his beatings

Richard shows his want for community/family when he doesn't call out the student who had been eating the walnuts, because when he was apart of a gang, he learned the rules of loyalty

lack of income due to racism, but also religious beliefs

Beaten for bad behavior

Has to move frequently
attention is diverted away from education and on money causing richard to start school late
