The 6 Rights

Right dose: determine prescribed amount, how many mg each capsule is.

Right medication: confirm the medication order, confirm with partner.
Right documentation: Work is not done until paper work is done. Write in detail what happened. i.e. did the medication work and how did the patient react?

Medications

Activated charcoal: absorbs toxins in GI tract: oral poisonings/overdose: decreased LOC, corrosives, petroleum substances
Aspirin (bayer): anti-inflammatory, fever, prevent platelets from clumping: relief of mild pain, chest pain, headache: hypersensitivity, recent bleeding
Albuterol/Proventil/Ventolin: stimulates NS, causing bronchodilation: asthma/wheezing: chest pain, tachycardia, hypersensitivity
Epinephrine/EpiPen: stimulates NS, causing bronchodilation: anaphylactic reaction: chest pain, hypertension, hypothermia
Nitroglycerine: dilates blood vessels: chest pain: hypotension, use of Viagra (ED) previous 24 hrs
Oral glucose: provides glucose for cells: low blood glucose: decreased LOC, nausea, vomiting
Oxygen: reverses hypoxia; O2 absorbed by lungs: no open flames, COPD
Acetaminophen (Tylenol): Analgesic, fever reducer: reduce mild pain/fever: hypersensitivity
Naloxone/Narcan, EVZIO auto injector: reverse respiratory depression secondary to opioid overdose: opioid poisoning: hypersensitivity
Diphenhydramine (benadryl): antihistamine, blocks histamine: mild allergic reactions: asthma, glaucoma, pregnancy, hypertension, infants
Ibuprofen, advil, motrin, nuprin: nonsteroidal anti inflammatory: mild pain/fever/headaches/muscle aches: hypersensitivity
