Christophine
Part 1
Christophine is introduced as the quasi mother figure for Antoinette, as she takes the role of Antionette's own mother - Annette. Also, though Christophine is a slave, the reader thinks that Antoinette does not think of her that way.

-
Christophine was a wedding present from the late Mr Cosway to Annette, it is suggested that she has worked for Antoinette's family for a very long time.
Christophine is shown to really care about the well being of Antoinette, as she shows concern of her situation.
"She run wild, she grow up worthless. And nobody care."
OBEAH
The reader is introduced to the powerful magic that Christophine posseses, which suggests that Christophine has more than meets the eye.
"dead man's dried hand, white chicken feathers... blood was falling into a red basin."
-
-
"But you were never molested, never harmed."
-
Part 2
Christophine was later introduced in Part 2, she is still presented to be Antoinette's quasi mother.
-
"here is Christophine who was my da, my nurse long ago."
"Doudou, che cocotte" which translates to 'dear little chicken' - a term of affection.
Her physical appearance.
"She was blacker than most, and her clothes, even the handkerchief round her head, were subdued with colour."
-
-
Throughout this part, the reader sees that Christophine has a lot of influence on Antoinette, as well as the slaves and could be argued - Rochester.
'I'll mash your face in, like I mash plantains'

Obeah
"Even if I can make him come to your bed, I cannot make him love you". This was when Christophine was going to give Antoinette a potion for Rochester. This quote suggests that there are limitations to the Obeah of Christophine.
"So that you can leave her alone. (Leave her alone)
"Not telling her why. (Why).
This passage could be inferred that Obeah is at work, in the form of hypnosis, on Rochester.
