Summative
Definition: Summative Assessments are given to check for student learning at the end of a learning unit.

Formative
Definition: Formative Assessments are a way to gather evidence of student learning. The information is used to check for student understanding, adjust instruction, and provide opportunity to give feedback.
Examples:
Think- Pair- Share: The teacher will ask a question over the daily objective and students will have a minute to think about the question. Then they will pair up with their neighbor and share their thinking with one another.
Exit Ticket: Students will be asked a question at the end of class to check for student understanding. They will answer the question then turn it in.
Diagnostic
Definition: Diagnostic Assessments are given to help identify a students strength and weaknesses in order to shape future instruction for that student.
Examples:

Pre Assessment: Can be given before a unit to check what students already know- which can help shape instruction for that unit.
Performance
Definition: Performance Assessments are a type of test that calls for students to perform a task rather than answer questions.
Examples:
Readers Theater: When students present a reading aloud to an audience. It can be used to test students reading fluency.
Create a Graph from Data: Students can collect data over a given period of time then create a graph to chart the data they found.

Interim/ Benchmark
Definition: Interim/ Benchmark Assessments are given periodically throughout the school year to check if students learning is on track with grade level expectations.
Examples:
District Assessments: Tests given at the end of each six weeks to check for student learning in the four CORE subjects.
STAAR: A Texas created standardized test given towards the end of the school year to check if students are where they need to be for their grade level.
