ASTHMA TRIGGERS
ENVIRONMENTALS:
- allergies
- air pollution
- dust & mold
- animal danger
SEASONAL:
- temperature/weather changes
- pollen allergens
- infections like cold and flu
EXERCISE-INDUCED:
- aerobic sports
- strenuous activity

TREATMENT:
INHALERS
RELIEVER:
- usually blue
- relieve symptoms when they occur (within a few minutes)
- can sometimes cause shaking or a fast heartbeat for a few minutes after they're used
PREVENTER:
- stop symptoms developing
- reduce the inflammation and sensitivity of person's airways
- can sometimes cause a fungal infection of the mouth or throat (oral thrush), a hoarse voice, a sore throat
COMBINATION:
- are used every day to help stop symptoms occurring and provide long-lasting relief if they do occur
- side effects are similar
MEDICINE:
- Leukotriene receptor antagonists
- Theophylline
- Steroid pills
- Injections

FACTS

- Affects people of all ages
- There is no cure, only simple treatments
- A deadly disease (around 250 000 die from it each year)
ASTHMA ATTACKS
SIGHNS (not necessearilly occur suddenly ):
- symptoms are getting worse
- a reliever inhaler doesn't help
- you're too breathless to speak, eat or sleep
- a tummy or chest ache
WHAT TO DO IF IT'S HAPPENING:
- sit upright (do not lie down) and try to take slow, steady breaths
- try to remain calm
- take 1 puff of your reliever inhaler every 30 to 60 seconds, up to a maximum of 10 puffs
- call for an ambulance if you do not have your inhaler with you
- if the ambulance has not arrived within 15 minutes, repeat step 2
PREVENTING:
- reduce the presence of triggers
- follow your personal asthma action plan and take all of your medicines
- have regular asthma reviews with a doctor
SYMPTOMS
HAPPEN OFTEN AND KEEP COMING BACK, ARE WORSE AT NIGHT:
- difficulties breathing
- breathlessness (shortness of breath)
- wheezing (a whistling sound when breathing
