Gender Roles
- During the period of when Macbeth was written, there were distinct expectations about the roles of men and women.
- Women were expected to be submissive to their husbands as in the bible, Adam was create first and eve was created from his rib. She was made for Adams comfort and to obey him and so a dominant women was unnatural and was known to be a symptom of a disorder.
- Lady Macbeth didn't like this almost 'rule' as she wanted to attain just as much power and authority as men and so she hides her feminine characteristics in order to become more masculine. She also hopes that this will help her find the courage to kill the king to become queen.
