The city is a transport hub, with an international airport and important docks providing raw materials for local industries and exporting products

        Without the dump, a lot of reusable items would go to waste. People in Lagos can save money by buying recycled goods.
- - - - 25% of households live in more than one room. only 10% have access to a kitchen, bath and toilet. Only 11% have piped water. Only 10% of people have a septic tank.
  - - - There are water vendors on the street selling water in containers. Its often difficult to obtain drinking water from any other source, even though the city is surrounded by water. only ten per cent of the population have a piped water supply that has been treated and purified. The rest of the population either rely on water vendors or dig their own wells or sink boreholes to reach groundwater supplies that lie below the water table. Water in the Lagoon or tidal creeks around the city is not suitable for drinking because its salty and polluted
- - - - 2014 the Makoko floating school was setup for lessons with up to 60 people at a time, its also a prototype for the sort of structures that could help Lagos communities in the future. It collapsed in 2016 due to a storm though.
      - Social benefits - up to 100 students could be educated for free, meaning they didn't need to scavenge to pay for the fees.
        The school was built by unskilled local workers - the skills they learnt equipped them to build and repair there own buildings
        The school was also used for local community meetings and activities, increasing Makoko's spirit
      - Economic benfits - Education improved local children's job prospects
        the school provided jobs for local teachers
        The school's success encouraged the government to launch its Makoko Regeneration plan. This aims to develop the slum further, e.g by building homes and biogas plant to produce cooking gas for local people
      - Environmental Benefits -
        The school was built using locally sourced materials, including 250 floating barrels. This meant that its construction didn't harm the local environment and repairs would be easy.
        The schools buoyancy allowed it to adjust to different water levels, and protect children from floods
        The school ran on solar power so its energy needs were met in a sustainable way.
        The school collected rainwater to meet its water needs - this meant that it didn't use resources that the local community relied on
    - - The urban poor living in Lagos' squatter settlements face many problems, including - poor housing, high crime rates, lack of services, unemployment, underemployment ( underpaid)
        With a rapidly growing urban population, conditions for many people are likely to get worse.
