HARDWARE AND OPERATING
SYSTEMS
COMPUTER LANGUAGE AND FUNCTION
binary system
The smallest unit of information that we can store on a computer is called a bit which is an abbreviation for binary digit.
ASCII
We give a code to each letters of the alphabet, and to the characters computers use, so that we can store them. This codes consist of the figures ´´1´´ and ´´0´´.
COMPUTER FUNCTIONS
Output
Data using peripheral devices
Storing
Data in the storage devices
Input
Data using peripheral devices
Processing
Data in the central processing unit (CPU) using the microprocessor and the memory
COMPUTER ELEMENTS
Microprocessor
The microprocessor is an integrated circuit made up of millions of tiny transistors working together to process the instructions and data received from the memory
Memory and units of storage
CACHE MEMORY
RAM connot work at the same speed as the microprocessor so a much faster memory is installed between the RAM and the microprocessor, the cache memory.
ROM BIOS
When you turn on your computer, it automatically checks thye system. This initial check is carried out using instructions in a especial read-only memory: the ROM BIOS
RAM
The computers main memory is its RAM (random access memory)
STORAGE DEVICES
The RAM stores data temporarily, when you turn off the computer this data dissapears.
MOTHERBOARD AND CONNECTING DEVICES
Inside the computer you will find a large board, we call it the motherboard. All the others components of the computers are connected.
The chipset
Is a number of integrated circuits designed to perform related functions.
The IDE, or ATA, and SATA connectors
connect the hard disk, CD drive or DVD drive the motherboard.
Connecting external devices
Slots
That can be used to expand or add new componets
PCI
PCI-Express

COMPUTER NETWORKS
Metropolitan area networks, made up of several LANs
Wide area networks covering a country or continent
Local area networks or LANs
WIRELESS NETWORKS
Wireless networks, known as WLANs use electromagnetic waves to transmit data. All computers need to have a Wireless networks card.
