Introduction to Parasitology
General classification
Protozoa
They are single-celled
Generally they lived inside of the host
Protozoa parasites include malaria parasites (Plasmodium species)
They obtain nutrition from the host (depending on where they are located)
Helminth
Types of helminth: flukes (termatodes), tapeworms(cestodes), roundworms(nematodes)
Helminths are worm-like parasites
Helminths develop through egg, larval and adult stages
Arthropods
an invertebrate animal having an exoskeleton, a segmented body, and paired joint appendages
Classification of arthropods
Insecta
-have six legs
-eg: lies, fleas, mosquitoes
Arachnida
-have eight legs
-eg: mites, ticks
-may transmit disease(vector)
Important Terminologies
Obligate Parasite
Must spend at least some of their life cycle in or on a host.
Facultative Parasite
Free-living, obtain nutrient from a host.
Host
The organism from which a parasite obtains its nutrition and shelter.
Parasite
A parasite is an organism that lives at the expense of another organism or the host.
Types of parasite
Base on location
Ectoparasite
a parasite such as flea that and lice that lives on the outside surface of its host.
Endoparasite
Lives within the bodies of other organism (host)
-protozoa, worm
Based on size
Macroparasite
any parasite that is visible to the naked eye.
Example : fleas,mite,lice
Microparasite
A microparasite is a subcategory of parasite that is short-lived,smaller than other parasites and reproduce within it host
Example : E.coli,staphylococcus aureus,haemophilus influenzae
Types of Host
Intermediate Host
Eg: Intermediate host of
plasmodium is human
The host that harbor a parasite during asexual stage
Definitive Host
The host that harbor a parasite while it reproduces sexually
Eg: Definitive host of plasmodium
is female
Anopheles
Reservoir Host
Infected organisms that make parasites available for transmission to other hosts
Eg: monkey is the reservoir host for
plasmodium
