Sheila

Act One

"a pretty girl in her early twenties, very pleased with life and very excited"

"(half serious, half playful) Yes - except for all last summer when you never came near me and I wondered what had happened to you"

"(Excited) Oh - Gerald - you've got it - is it the one you wanted me to have"

"Now I really feel engaged"

"Oh - how horrible! Was it an accident?"

"I've been so happy tonight. Oh I wish you hadn't told me "

"You talk as if we were responsible"

"I think it was a mean thing to do"

"But these girls aren't cheap labour - they're people"

"with a little cry, gives a half-stifled sob, and then run out"

"(miserably) so I'm really responsible?"

"I'd been in a bad temper anyhow"

"If she had been some miserable plain little creature, I don't suppose I'd have done it"

"(laughs rather hysterically) why - you fool - he knows"

Act Two

"(bitterly) so that's what you think I'm really like"

"I know, I know - and I can't stop thinking about it"

"I know I'm to blame - and I'm desperately sorry"

"I don't understand about you"

"(slowly, carefully now) You mustn't try and build up a kind of wall between us and that girl. aiIf you do, then the inspector will just break it down"

"he's giving us the rope so that we'll hang ourselves"

"In fact, in some odd way, I rather respect you more than I've ever dine before"

"(with feeling) Mother, I think it was cruel and vile"

Act Three

"(who is crying quietly) That's the word of it"

"I'm ashamed of it"

"The point is, you don't seem to have learnt anything"

"It's you two who are being childish - trying not to face facts"

"That's what's inspector, and not whether the man is a police inspector or not"

"I suppose we're all nice people now"

"He inspected us all right"

"Between us we drove that girl to commit suicide"

"It frightens me the way you talk|"

"I remember what he said, how he looked and what he made me feel"

"I must think"
