WESTPHALIA'S MYTHS AND AGREEMENTS
Treaties
The Peace of Westphalia
Because of the spread of misunderstandings, this treaty started to be associated in the middle east with the collapse of ideas of state sovereignty, because they were "originated in Westphalia".
Respect
Rights
Thanks to the treaty, the princes were obliged to respect all of their subjects' rights, such as the right of public worship, the enjoyment of properties, and access to judicial recourse.
Sovereignty
Princes
According to the myth of the Westphalian Peace, giving the princes sovereignty caused the creation of a system based on states’ sovereign equality and nonintervention in domestic affairs.
Culmination
Thirty Years War
The agreement of the Peace of Westphalia culminated with the Thirty Years War, which brought and end to the disputes between the princes, the Holy Roman empire, Sweden, France, and their allies.
Misconception
Expansion
The myths about the Peace of Westphalia were spread through the politians, international historians, political scientists, many textbooks, and all media.
Structure
Contribution
The agreements generated by Westphalia provided a structure for the legal settlements of disputes.
Justice
Deposition
The agreement made possible that if the prince was not fulfilling his role and failed in his duties, he could face a deposition from power.
Notional Model
Support
It is a myth that Westphalia supported the notional model of the modern state that failed in Syria and Iraq.
Conflicts
Resolution
Their agreements also set the structure for conflict resolution by allowing the intervention of guarantor powers outside of Germany (the focal point for conflicts at the time) to uphold the peace settlement.
Provision
Lessons
Their agreements provided lessons for turning external conflicts into external guarantees of peace.
