For example, black Americans may have better mental health outcomes on average because they are more likely to make positive meaning out of negative experiences, as well as feel as though it is the system that is failing them, not their own personal shortcomings. Whites, however, are more likely to come to the conclusion that their achievements are based one their own merit. Therefore, if their fail to reach their goal in a system that their believe gives equal opportunities to everyone (independent of race, SES, etc.), they will blame themselves and have poorer psychological outcomes.
