Pre-Assessment for Differentiation
Activity: Students do a quick quiz on the vocabulary topic (Around the World) using Kahoot
Students with some knowledge,
but not higher order thinking
Students are formally introduced to the new vocabulary using a visually appealing
slide show
. They are instructed to write down the words and draw a picture next to them, when necessary, definitions or translations can be provided.
Students complete a matching activity with definitions.
Limited Knowledge
ELL students
Students are given
simple definitions
or translations of each words and go over in small groups.
Play charades and draw pictures of the words to add a visual and kinaesthetic element.
Special Needs Students
Physical Disability
Students are given copies of the words in accessible form, such as in
Braille
, an audio file, with bright pictures or with enlarged text.
Learning Disability
Students can work one-on-one with the teacher doing through the
phonics
and definitions of individual words. An additional vocabulary list with pictures is supplied to assist comprehension.

Students are given a list of additional vocabulary at a higher level. In pairs or small groups, they must look up the words in a
dictionary
