Definitions
Phonology - area of study that refers to the more abstract sound system
Phonetics - area of study that is concerned with investigating how sounds are actually produced
Prosodics - study of how speakers can shape meanings thorugh emphasising certain aspects of intonation, speed and volume
Heterophone - words that have the same spelling but very different pronunciations and meanings
Homophone - words that are pronounced the same but have a different meaning
Sound Iconicity - the matching of sound to an aspect of meaning
Sound Patterns in Literature
Consonance - repetition of plosive sounds
Assonance - repetition of vowels
Sibilance - fricative and affricate sounds
Onomatopoeia
Lexical - exists as a spoken word
Non-lexical - does not exist as a spoken word

Variation in pitch and intonation
Can often signal important emotional aspects behind meaning
