Pre-assessment for differentiation -
Multi-grade Art class (grades 1-3)
Teaching a multi-grade classroom, I often differentiate by the grade level. Although students work on the same project, each grade level has different tasks and requirements for assessment. High achievers in each group are encouraged to fulfill the requirements of the higher grade.
Each group has a choice of different approaches to the project.
This project is the first within the Color Unit. The entire class will be creating a Balloon Color Wheel overlapping a city skyline. Students will demonstrate paint mixing and will create a city skyline.
Additional pre-assessment is ability and knowledge based. All students take a quiz (game based like Kahoot or Time to Climb) to assess their previous knowledge. Most students have previous experience with color mixing basics, but might struggle with understanding the color wheel, etc. Another part of the assessment is skills based. Students will complete a short worksheet - drawing circles and ovals free-hand. mixing colors, etc. Based on their cumulative scores, they might be moved to the lower or higher age group.
3rd grade (6 students initially) - Red Group
Base project for this age group: Students are to create a balloon color wheel overlapping a city skyline. In addition to an interesting skyline, third grade students will create some additional background elements that include color.
All students will have an oval stencil available to trace their balloons
2 students are meeting the standard and will be working on the 3rd grade base project in the Red Group
3 students scored above the standard of their age level. They will create a more detailed and complex background, including elements of the sky and the city. All of the elements might create a secondary narrative.
1 student did not meet the standard for their age group and will be working with the Yellow Group.
2nd grade (8 student initially) - Yellow Group
Base project for this age group: Students are to create a balloon color wheel overlapping a city skyline. 2nd grade students will create an interesting skyline (including interesting detail or surprising elements). All students will have an oval stencil available to trace their balloons
3 students are meeting the standard and will be working on the 2nd grade base project in the Yellow Group
3 students will be moving to the Red Group group
2 students did not meet the standard for their age group and will be working with the Blue Group.
1st grade (7 students initially ) - Blue Group
Base project for this age group: Students are to create a balloon color wheel overlapping a city skyline. They will demonstrate paint mixing and will create a simple skyline. All students will have an oval stencil available to trace their balloons. 1st grade students will be able to audio record their artist statement.
3 students are meeting the standard and will be working on the 1st grade base project in the Blue group
Based on their high scores and ability levels, 2 students will be moving to the Yellow Group group
2 students did not meet the standard for their age group and the teacher will be working with them individually
SEP Students
The teacher is to provide both oral instruction, along with the instructional step-by-step demonstration. The teacher will help the students who are struggling individually. Stencils will be provided for student use to trace oval balloons. Depending on their abilities, students may choose to record an audio recording of their artist statement. Simplified written version of the artist statement form will also be available.
