THE WORLD’S OCEANS - Coggle Diagram
THE WORLD’S OCEANS
When the tectonic plates separated, they divided the five big oceans that we currently know:
Pacific Ocean
- The Pacific influences the climate of the entire planet through what is known as "El Niño" phenomenon that occurs annually.
- In that seabed is also located the deepest place in the world, Marianas Trenches (11.000m), being 25% higher than the Everest ( 8,848 m above sea level)
- Its western shores are Asia and Australia and its eastern shores are America.
- It is too big that occupies a third part of the whole earth.
- Ecuador is riparian, it is the oldest, more extensive and deeper in the planet.
Atlantic Ocean
- It extends from Europe and Africa. After the Pacific, it is the second most extensive ocean and occupies 16% of the surface of the Earth.
- It is the youngest ocean on the planet, and it has been formed 200 million years ago when the supercontinent Pangea was divided.
- It also communicates with the four other oceans. With the Pacific ocean, it communicates through the Panama Canal
- The Atlantic covers a number of well-known seas such as the Mediterranean, the Caribbean
Indian Ocean
- It bathes the eastern coasts of Africa, the Arabian Peninsula and those of South Asia to the western ones of the Malay Peninsula, the Sunda Islands and Australia
- Its surface represents 20% of the world's marine spaces
- It is heavily trafficked by oil ships from its sources in the Gulf of Indonesia to markets in Southeast Asia.
Glacial Arctic Ocean
- It is found around the grounds of the North Pole. It is the least deep and smallest ocean in the world.
- It has two climatic zones: the arctic polar and the sub polar.
- It is in contact with the Atlantic and the Pacific (through the Bering Strait)
- It is known that the Arctic has large deposits of natural gas and oil, therefore, its ownership is very disputed.
Glacial Antarctic Ocean
- At the bottom of the Antarctic ocean there are deposits of petroleum, natural gas, minerals.
Fishing is prohibited for the most part of the ocean.
- It is also known as Southern or Southern Osseous, extends from the Antarctic coast, to 60% south.
- It connects to three of oceans: Pacific, Atlantic and Indian. The water temperature varies from -2 to 10 ° C.
-
-
The oceans were formed around 4,000 million years ago.

-
They are the largest lungs on the planet, since they provide more than half of all the oxygen in the atmosphere
