A pivotal moment that sparked an interest in behaviour management becoming an aspect of my teaching I want to make more effective
To help narrow the gap that children situated in a economically deprived area face as they are statistically already at a disadvantaged in comparison to their peers. Implementing a positive, proactive behaviour management policy will allow for all children to engage in learning. Ensuring my teaching style is tailored to children of all backgrounds, abilities and dispositions (Teaching Standard 1)
My lack of knowledge, understanding and also my inability to communicate effectively with children became evident immediately during my placement (especially as lots of the children had additional communication and language needs). On reflection, I knew this was an aspect of my teaching that I needed to develop and adapt in order to progress.
I had never been exposed to positive reinforcement as an effective behaviour strategy and did not really understand the means behind this
Jean Piaget's Cognitive Development Theory (1936) emphasises the importance of children being influenced by their environment - behaviour links to this

Takes into consideration other factors as to why behaviours may occur as these all play a vital role in supporting children. Environmental, social and emotional factors can result in children displaying behaviours. It is of paramount importance that practitioners understand this.
Establishing that positive relationship with the children is vital in regard to supporting and managing behaviour effectively in the classroom.
:
Placement situated in an economically deprived area - the children required that extra bit of support/nurtruring
Due to the context of my placement, a lot of the children were faced with other factors that can contribute to behaviours - environmental, social and emotional needs, poverty, fragmented family units, chaotic home lives
My placement had extremely high behavioural standards. I had to develop my understanding and awareness of this and why it was most beneficial for the children in this situation.
Lots of the children had additional communication & language needs meaning some of the ways in which they communicated were through behaviours. I had to be constantly mindful of this.
