Genes and Molecular Machines
Heredity
Phenotype
The physical appearance of the offspring.
Examples wight, weight, hair color, eye color.
Genotype
The genes of the cells. The genetic constitution of an individual organism.
Examples of genotype, the dominant and recessive alleles. What the offspring inherits from the parents.
Types of Cells
Eukaryotic Cells
An organism consisting of a cell or cells in which genetic material is DNA in the form of chromosomes.
Examples of eukaryotic cells are animals, plants, and fungus.
Prokaryotic Cells
A microscopic single-celled organism that has neither a distinct nucleus with a membrane nor other specialized organelles.
Examples of prokaryotic cells are bacteria and archaea.
Cell Division
Meiosis
A type of cell division that results in four daughter cells each with half the number of chromosomes of the parent cell.
Examples of meiosis are gametes (sex cells).
Mitosis
The type of cell division that results in two daughter cells each having the same number of chromosomes.
Examples of mitosis are cells in the human body such as skin, blood, and muscles.
