Gene Mutations
When a mutation in DNA happens, it means a change in one or more DNA bases, then different proteins can be produced which can affect an organism's traits.
-
Genetic Mutations:
-
Deletion, a base is removed
Substitution, the wrong base is matched
-
Types of mutation
Chromosome Mutations
Chromosomes are made up of DNA and proteins. The human chromosome number is 46 with 23 from an egg cell and 23 from a sperm cell.
Chromosomal mutations:
Deletion, where some of the genetic material breaks off.
Inversion, when a broken chromosome segment gets inverted and put back on the chromosome.
Duplication, where extra copies of genes are generated.
Translocation, when a fragment from one chromosome breaks off and attaches to another chromosome.
