Evaluate research on the influence of technology on cognitive processing. (Mueller and Oppenheimer, 2014) Mavi, Bernardo, Amanda and Gabriel M
Testable
Procedure
- Using a laptop for notes might be hindering learning
- Writing by hand isn't fast enough to keep up with a professor, therefore we process the information and put it into our own words to be able to keep up.
- Experiment: 109 UCLA undergraduate students, 27 of which were male
-
○ Participants would be tested on the subject a week after the lectures and would not be allowed to use the notes or take them home.
Empirical evidence
Results
○ Factual questions
-
§ Hand and laptop without studying had a score difference of 0.1 and standard deviation with a 0.4 difference.
-
Application
What Mueller and Oppenheimer tested in their study was basically, that laptop note-taking is less effective than longhand note-taking. They focused more on the students' capacity for multitasking and distractions when using computers.
For example, at ISC most of the work students do it's on the computers. We have written assignments but most of the works are done in a google doc written by students.
Predictability
Predicts that using technology/laptop to take notes affects our ability to remember and understand important ideas about what we’re learning --> negative effect on how we obtain information
Construct Validity
Hypothesis = using laptops - or other devices - to take notes may actually hinder learning
The study measured this suggestion by following a standardized procedure -
Conditions:
○ Study and no-study, where study were allowed 10 minutes before the quiz to be tested and the no-study were not and simply were tested.
○ 40 questions, 10 on each lecture
-
Statement
It is a valid study due to standardized procedures and empirical evidence, even tough the sample might be unrepresentative of the whole population
- Issues with the Mueller and Oppenheimer study:
-
-
-
Unbias
Volunteer Sample
Unrepresentative: only had 27 males when they could have different results. Also only used college students when there could be different results for different age groups.
