Gender and the North/South Divide
Damaging Norms of the North
NGO and voluntary groups have always had an emphasis on helping women to avoid "masculine colonialism" by replacing it with "feminine aid"
When Southern women were fighting for rights, they roped in Northern issues out of the default that the North is more important
NGO's are under scrutiny in the context of women's issues because they can be corrupt
emerging gender mainstreaming have proven to be for control rather than actual feminism
Most NGO's do not set out with feminism in mind when they decide to help Third World Countries
It is assumed that women, especially in the Third World, are constantly dependent on men
Development can be associated with economic growth and prosperity, this can be damaging to women's progress
Feminism and Western Influence
Southern women's ideals of feminism and Northern women's ideals differed in the way that the South is concerned about poverty and colonialism and the North is concerned about politics and male-female relations
Women wanting to impact institutions is hard because of power dynamics between different groups of women
WID policies improved materialistic women's issues but didn't change much with their socioeconomic stances
Women's efficiency is dumbed down to only fall into stereotyped norms
Responding with feminism to sexism is associated with being less professional
Religion in Third World countries can also contribute to perceived oppression of women
Models of power are not strictly binary and distinct; it is important to understand that men are not the only contributors to the patriarchy, women are not the only gender to be oppressed, ect
Problems with Colonization
women in the global South accept Western Feminist work as their own because of ethnocentricity enforced on them
There are a lot more political issues for women in the Third World, rather than just marginalization from women in the West
not all women are the same and should't be treated as such when all women have differing issues
the dynamic that appears when society assumes that women are always victims and men are always perpetrators is dangerous to women's growth
Generalization is common across the globe for women in general or groups of women and it can be harmful to their success
it assumed that colonization effects marriage in the South but the ideal that women are only meant to be controlled and produce children
There is profound cultural significance for Middle Eastern women to wear a veil and it is so often assumed that it is only for means of sexual subordination
The sexual division of labor can be attributed to devaluation of women's work and their subordination in the work force
