HEALTH PSYCHOLOGY
olds and milner
investigate whether electrical stimulation on the brain acts as a reward/punishment or neutral stimulus
-
PROCEDURE- lab experiment, IV- location of electrode, DV- number of lever presses
-
tested in a SKINNERS BOX. electrical stimulation only occured when a lever was pressed by the rat,
-
extinction- 30mins per day, pressing lever did not produce stimulation
-
CONCLUSION- septal area responsible for rewarding effects when stimulated. also concluded there are punishment areas of the brain
GENERALISABILITY- low sample size- rats brains, no inner folded cortex- decision making behaviour will be different to humans
RELIABILITY- lab exp, allows easy repeatability due to easily replicable environment (skinners box)
VALIDITY- lab experiment allows easily controlled variables, prevent confounding variables, however lacks ecological valdity as the artificial environment could effect the behaviour of the rats

bio treatment
drug therapy
methadone- opioid agonist that binds to same receptors as heroine- this acts to satisfy the users cravings but with fewer harmful side affects
NRT- nicotine replacement therapy- another agonist treatment- relieves symptoms by giving the high but without all the other toxic substances- gives clean and objectively controlled dosage of nictotine
-
-
-
non bio treatment
aversion therapy
a behavioral treatment based on classical conditioning. an undesirable behaviour combined with an unpleasant stimulus - eventually causes a negative association with the drug.
nicotine addiction- can be treated by rapid smoking sit in a closed room and take a puff every 6 seconds

ANTI-DRUG CAMPAIGNS
Talk to frank
A Campaign for several methods of anti-drug communication; TV ads, Posters, livechats, helplines ect... it is directed wards young people 11-18 but also gives information to parents to develop their knowledge
psychological strategy- identification- SLT- learn through observation and imitation. - therefore Frank acts as an older brother- and will therefore model his behaviour
psychological strategy- emotional appeal- more likely to be effective, as the observer is sympathetic towards the campain. more likely to cause a behaviour change. classical conditioning approach- associate negative feelings with the drug.
