Tall
- Narrow span of control
- Closer communication
- Each manager is responsible for a few workers
- Close supervision
- Longer chain of command
Advantages:
- Span of control small, tighter control over subordinates making more easily supervised
- Creates clear route for promotion acting as a motivator
Disadvantages:
- Long chain of command creating poor communication
- Messages distorted slowing down decision making
Flat
- Manager is responsible for a large number of workers
- Greater Delegation but fewer levels
- Wide span of control
- Short-chain of command
- Easier to motivate employees
Advantages:
- Better communication due to short chain of command
- Empowered staff due to greater responsibility
Disadvantages:
- Managers lose control
- Negative impact on producitity
Matrix
Advantages:
- Improves communication
- Allows individuals to use particular skills
- Greater Motivation
- Sharing resources
Disadvantages:
- Difficult to co-ordinate
- Teams may have divided loyalties
- May not be clear lines of accountability
- Takes time to work in this stucture
