From the Qur'an:
- zakah has been practised since the time of the early prophets.
- Prophet Ismail a.s used to enjoin the practice of zakah on his people.
- When Prophet Isa a.s was a baby, be mentioned the practice of zakah to his people
When we give Zakah, we are continuing the tradition of the prophets that has carried on for thousands of years.

Types of Zakah

3) Gold -Unless worn as a jewellery, gold is subject to zakah

If a person dies before he gives his zakah for the year, it becomes the duty of his heirs to give zakah (based on the wealth and property that he left behind)
Recipients of Zakah:

2) Al-Miskin : Owns something, but it is not sufficient for his needs

4) Al-Muallafah Qulubuhum: One who recently embraces Islam (they are given allowance and training to understand the meaning of being Muslims)
5) Al-Riqab: people who want to free themselves from slavery.

6) Al-Gharimin: those who are in debt and needs assistance to meet his basic needs such as utility bills, medical and school fees
7) Fisabilillah: one who strive in the cause
of Allah for the betterment of the community. (In Singapore, this category is spent on Mosque programmes, madrasah projects and drug rehabilitations)
8) Ibnussabil: stranded travellers on a permissible journey (food aid and return tickets are given to them)
