In 1877, Adolf Kussmaul, a German neurologist, coined the term “word blindness” to refer to children that, despite their power of sight, intellect and overall capacity to communicate, had a hard time decoding words. Later, in 1887,Rudolf Berlin, a German physician first used the term dyslexia to refer to reading difficulties linked to disabilities.
In 1968, the first definition of dyslexia was agreed. It was defined as “A disorder manifested by difficulty in learning to read despite conventional instruction, adequate intelligence, and socio-cultural opportunity. It is dependent upon fundamental cognitive disabilities which are frequently of constitutional origin.”
