Ethical implications
Considers the consequences that psychological theory/research has on the participants of the researcher the group of people represented by the research
Socially sensitive=given to any research that may be controversial. The implications of socially sensitive research may be seen as giving scientific credibility to prejudice and discrimination and can be used by the government to justify public policy

Bobo doll study
Positive=people would not have recognised that exposure to violent images on TV/films/video games could encourage impressionable young people to imitate them. Nowadays there are age restrictions on aspects of the media that are deemed to have unsuitable content.
Negative=A negative consequence of this research is that people are less likely to take responsibility for their own actions if they perform an antisocial act - instead blaming the role models in their lives for acting in a way that could 'lead them astray'.
Free will vs determinism
-
-
-
-
Psychic determinism
Sees behaviour as determined by unconscious forces, for example the id. ego and superego repressed memories and psychosexual stages.
-
Soft determinism
Takes a less severe view and suggests that humans have an element of free will and although you may be determined to behave in a certain way (because of your biology) we still have an element of free will.
Biological determinism
Sees behaviour as determined by biological influences eg. inherited genes, neurochemistry and brain structure
Gender bias
-
Beta bias
Is when differences between males and females are minimised. This happens when a study only uses participants of one gender but then conclusions are applied to the whole population.
Alpha bias
Is when difference between males and females are exaggerated. This type of bias can be used to undervalue one of the sexes.
Bias
Inclination or prejudice for or against one person or group, especially in a way considered to be unfair.
Gender bias
Is a preference towards one gender. It can either exaggerate or minimise the differences between males and females.

Previous research

Wilson (1994)=Alpha bias
In this case females are undermined "Their dominance is biological and determined by their male hormones"
Milgram=Beta bias
This happens when a study only uses participants of one gender but then conclusions are applied to the whole population.
Zimbardo=Beta bias
This happens when a study only uses participants of one gender but ten conclusions are applied to the whole population.
