Positive Effects of New Media
Research
Mood Booster
-People have embraced their insecurities a lot more due to the fact that society has begun to accept them
-Through research, I have discovered that new media has a specific fate if we continue the way we’re going. This can be a negative or a positive.
-The surge of new media has created not only an outlet, but a way to find communities that you belong to.
-New media is taking up somewhere important in the future
Personal Experience
I stopped comparing myself so much
Representation of Black women and women with “flaws”
-I’ve let new media dictate what I do with my body, life and honestly soul when I was younger. I am happy for the new generation because as the world is still cruel, more people are willing to speak out and protect each other.
-Times have changed tremendously since I was 13. That was only 8 years ago, but the online world is much different. I’ve never seen so much real positivity being represented. There are pages that update on death row prisoners, world news, and of course celebrities. The internet is not all bad.
-We are in charge of where new media ends up and what it looks like. So far, we’ve gone from one extreme to the other.
Importance of New Media
-The importance of new media ranges from turning in an essay to creating new major products.
forces people to acknowledge their digital footprint and be the judge of their own activity during the years. What future are you contributing to?
Provides confidence and creates a world for those with social anxiety. The percentages of people with anxiety is extremely high, but many have stated that new media has helped them come out of their shells. Some even met their spouses.
-With the pandemic the online community has grown over 100%, so it is important that we keep up or else we could crash. Since most things are digital, it would be like a second apocalypse.
The Opposing Side
-The dangers of not knowing who you’re talking to is a major disadvantage to social media. For children, this is a way for them to get hurt or kidnapped. For adults, the outcome is the same. No one is safe from online predators.
-The illusion of photoshop is a negative, also. Many influencers who have younger fans have yet to grasp the dangers they put their fans in. Not only does it cause insecurities, but it creates an unrealistic beauty standard. Instagram models such as Madison Beer have been “exposed” for creating such standards.
-FOMO is almost like a disease. The fear of missing out is what has caused many car accidents, failing grades, no communication and loss of connection with reality. Many people spend over 16 hours throughout the day.
-With the algorithms these sites and applications provide, posts and people who have the most “in common” with the user will frequent the explore page and sneak into advertisements. Applications like Instagram have settings to where the user can say a certain post was not enjoyed, etc, but these have flaws as well. Recently, Instagram meme accounts with millions of followers have found a loophole on the app. It turns out that hashtagging a post with “#breastcancer” and “#breastcancerawareness” allows for videos of women flashing their breasts to slip through the application’s security.
Where We’re Going
-Where we are going sets the tone for what we hand down to our children.
-Again, with the pandemic the world of new media will never be the same. No one can say with absolute certainty that they know the direction, but it’s not difficult to come up with a theory.
-With new media concepts driving the workforce, that trend isn’t likely to change as we look to future media concepts. Social media, digital advertising, and increased access to the internet through various devices have all shaped trends in media.
-Data and analytics will continue to change. Analytics from online advertising measure more than the success of a specific advertising campaign. They can also detect shifts in the campaign. Data collected can help marketers refine the ad’s message, determine which channels to use, and gain insight into who exactly is listening.
