UDL Theory and Practice (a selection from Chapter 5 - The Strategy Principle
Evidence from neuroscience in relation to the strategic guidelines: frontal lobes
secondary motor cortex
networks that coordinate simple movements into elaborate and fluent skills that are the hallmarks of human ability.
primary motor cortex
the neural networks that are most directly involved in producing simple voluntary motor movement
prefrontal cortex
“executive functions,” underlying the especially human ability not only to be skillful but to be goal-directed and strategic in our actions.
Frontal lobes: a source of individual variation.
Their abilities to learn to coordinate simple movements into fluent skills and abilities (their ability to develop fluency in skills such as writing, speaking, dancing, drawing, playing sports)
Their primary motor capabilities (their ability to move and perform basic actions).
The ability to develop competent executive functions for executing certain skills and movements (their ability to set appropriate goals for themselves, to choose effective strategies and skills, to monitor their own progress)
Implications
he variability within each of these areas of cortex is largely systematic and predictable. That is, without evaluating a particular group of students we can estimate the kinds of variability we, as educators, are likely to encounter in a group.
These three areas of specialization are largely independent as sources of variability
Planning for that range of variability with our curricular design will enable us to engage and support a majority of learners within the flexible curriculum itself.
