Module 11: The Shoulder (Initial)
Difficulties
Adherence and expectations of what physiotherapy would provide had proven challenges to obtaining positive outcomes at times
Often the patients I see have a multitude of complexities; however providing patient centered care entails perhaps providing treatment for the shoulder, in order to gain trust to manage other issues
Overview
complex biomechanical joint
common cause of pain/ dysfunction in the workforce, sport populations and elderly
lots of research showing efficacy of physiotherapy VS surgical intervention
Benefits/Opporunties
great opportunity for review of anatomy + biomechanics
reflect on some of the pre-conceived notions I have about the biomechanics and treatment techniques
Feelings
an area I come across as a secondary issue (eg- stroke), and have found varying success, which is frustrating
often frustrated that the medical fraternity are quick to use methods such as steroid injections
Often felt daunted when treating shoulders that were complex/ not responding as expected
Creativity
Keep it simple; break it down to practical applications of anatomy / biomechanics so as not to get lost in the complexity
Perhaps approach one of the surgeons in a base hospital nearby to observe a surgery
Facts
physiotherapists in an optimum place to provide education for good shoulder health; posture, 'prehab' etc
an anatomical area that is extensively research, including in sub populations (stroke, sports etc.)
