Ch. 26 Community Ecology, Crosslink Connection: A course moss Selaginells…
-
Crosslink Connection: A course moss Selaginells pilifera grows even on bare granite boulders. Along with it are a small cactus Echinocereus pectinatus and clumps of grass. Selaginells forms mats that hold rainwater and soil that are helpful for the cacti. The seedlings of E. pectinatus grow better with the moss but they can also survive if they were to lose the selginella.
Crosslink Connection: The importance of scale when measuring diversity can be shown in a area of Big Bend National Park. If this are were divided into sample plots, some would have no plants, others would have few yellow plants, and one would have a variety of species. Diversity varies with distance because this park is very heterogeneous.
Crosslink Connection: Removal of a damn from a stream will allow the stream to flow naturally again. The sediment will redistribute and allow communities to flourish. Fish will be able to migrate and other organisms will now have suitable habitats that were destroyed when the dam was first created.
