Cross Connection: Organisms on a fallen log constitute a smaller community than all the Olympic Peninsula, not only in time but in space. This area didn't exist as a habitat until the tree died and fell; after that, it could be occupied by fungi, bacteria, mosses, fern, and even tree seedlings. But this community will last 100 years or less until the log decays away.
