Jurassic Park: 2nd Iteration 2nd Hour - Coggle Diagram
Jurassic Park: 2nd Iteration 2nd Hour
Characters
Ian Malcolm: fictional mathematician
trying to undermine the operation
Chaos Theory: small changes can impact a system in huge ways.
https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/chaos/
Complex systems: they have an underlying order
Simple systems: Can predict the outcome (pool ball example) because of less factors. However, any small detail can create unpredictable behavior (small dents on the wood, imperfections of the ball, etc.).
Quote in beginning of Iteration: Relates to the "subsequent redrawing's" of the park and changes to the initial plan.
Re-doing the dinosaurs: the dinosaurs attacking Tina instead of just the infants (Dr. Grant saying he wasn't sure dinosaurs would attack a grown child). Possibly we have some changes in dinosaur behavior/mirroring the elephant.
Personality: dry/analytical, wears only black and gray, why think about anything frivolous when I can be thinking about science/math. Egotistical/narcisistic, but very clear explanation of chaos theory.
Dennis Nedry: computer programmer, stereotyped as a fat/sloppy programmer, current suspicion he will steal the embryos.
Lewis Dodgson: Biosyn board member, aggressive geneticist, kicked out of grad school for human experimentation.
Reverse engineering (72). Foreshadowing of stealing of the embryos from InGen.
Money motivation: merchandising, opening their own park, etc.
Donald Gennaro: Motivation is money as well. Affiliated with Coen, Swain, and Ross (the law firm bankrolling the park/organized the investment between the Japanese investors and Hammond).
"We're going to make so much money" (88).
Dr. Alan Grant: Based off of James Horner.
Cares more about the discovery than the academics or money of it. Much more informal.
Professor, but preferred to be outdoors in the digs because that is where the work is being done. Active person rather than passive.
Only character who doesn't talk to Dr. Sattler through the lens of a "woman."
Dr. Ellie Sattler
The only woman on the island and judged by the other characters for being a woman and a scientist. Paleobotanist- prehistoric plant study.
Hammond: Described multiple times as eccentric, passionate person, short-sighted (brought his grandchildren to the park).
First Grant and Sattler refuse to come, but then Hammond throws money at them to finance their expeditions for the next two summers.
If they didn't go, they risk not getting funding in the future.
Second Iteration is more scientific
procompsognathid: reportedly the species of dinosaur released/present on the main island of Costa Rica.
Issues/Discoveries
Hammond's tiny elephant (64-5). Not only was he able to clone an elephant, but he was able to modify it.
Foreshadowing of what could happen with the dinosaurs (acted like a mean rodent). Genetic modification can create changes in behavior as well as physical (65).
