What is the message that Disney are trying to put across?
that they are inclusive and not a racist company
that as a company they recognize the need for this film
they see how it is now socially immoral or unacceptable to not have this representation within the Marvel cinematic universe which in come ways reflects are one.
that they are inclusive of race or are trying to make up for the lake of diverse (realistic) representation that they predominantly use
that they are not like other global conglomerates who still aren't doing this - that they are "one of the good ones"
What is the representation of the Black community like and how does it link to historical context?
it is name stems form a civil rights activist group from the 1970s called the Black Panthers and Malcom X was part of
it is very relatable for black community as their community is being represented in a positive light (Blaxploitation) which hasn't really been done before especially not by Marvel or Disney
it is uncommon that main characters are POC let alone most of the cast which is what Black Panther is
it was also released when Donald Trump was president and could be interpreted as a n acknowledgement / celebration of the previous President Baraka Obama who was the first black / African American President in the history of the USA.
How does the advertising appeal to the target audience?
but also because of the predominant all black cast which a wider target audience was created from because it was revolutionary that such a huge company was doing it and creating a relatable content for the Black community
they did this by advertising it as sort of the first of its kind, by making the age certificate young enough so as many people as possible could see it the trailers and teasers, posters and merchandise where all significantly different to the usual ones because of the divers casting which made the film stand out.
Well obviously the marvel Audience is absolutely huge and spans many generations and because it is all based of comics- and this one was the first time that this character had been film adapted it was immensely existing had lot of stigma around it.
