Has insecurities about his age, race and life as a soldier, which helps Iago to prey on him
Eloquent, respected by those around him. Goes against the typical depiction of a Moor, and contrasts other black characters in Shakespeare's plays (titus andronicus)
Quite often referred to as 'he' or 'him' or with racial terms e.g. 'The moor', especially in the first scene, where he is not initially present
-
Quite often an outsider, stands aside in scenes or is not present. Helps with Iago preying on him
Venician government needs and respects Othello, and he is aware of this, as seen in his dying scene when he reminds them of the 'services' he has carried out for them
-
The descendant of a royal line of kings, which he refers to when he defends his right to marry Desdemona
Almost always speaks in verse and speaks well in public, although he doubts this
Highly values his reputation as do the majority of Venetian men, which explains his need for revenge when he fears he has been cuckolded
Marriage to Desdemona a political act? Black soldier marrying a white aristocrat, a very unlikely pairing
The fact that he married Desdemona in secret does not help his case that he has nothing to hide in the marriage, adds suspicion about his intentions
Begins to think and speak like Iago in the second half of the play, when Iago has manipulated his imagination
IAGO
Takes advantage that Cyprus is in a state of uneasiness with the threat of invasion, which would directly affect Othello as the general of all the armies, to add to Othello's downfall. Smart and manipulative
