How is leather processed- step-by-step
1. Curing
- The animal skin used to make the leather must be well preserved in order to prevent rotting. For this, the hide is often salted, frozen or chilled.
2. Soaking
- Once the leather is cured, it is left to soak in water for hours or days.
3. Painting
- This is when wool is removed from the hide using chemicals.
4. Liming
- To remove any unwanted hair from the hide using alkalis
5. Fleshing
- Where the hide is passed through a machine to remove any flesh or tissues from the fleshy side of the hide.
6. Bating
- Enzymes are added to the hide to flatten and relax it
7. Pickling
- Pickling is done to prepare the hide for tanning. The hide is made slightly acidic using acids or salt solutions.
8. Tanning
- This process ensures that the hide is protected from chemicals, moisture and microorganisms. It is usually done with oils, vegetables and minerals.
9. Splitting
- The leather is sliced into two layers using a machine.
