Efficiency - Some of the input is always lost to overcome friction or for moving parts. Ratio of output to input * 100% is called efficiency and is always less than one.
Types of Simple Machines
Inclined Plane
-
-
Ladder, ramp, staircase, slide
Wedge
When two inclined planes are put together to form a triangle, they form a wedge which has one sharp edge that can be used to split objects or cut them into two.
Knife, axe blade, scissors' blades, nail, door stopper, pushpin, saw
-
It reduces the surface area so that a large pressure can be created on applying small effort which pierces through easily.
Lever
A lever consists of the fulcrum (fixed point), effort, and load (resistance).
-
-
Principle of lever
Distance of the fulcrum from the point of effort is effort arm.
Distance of the fulcrum from the point of load is load arm.
-
-
Wheel and Axle
In this a wheel rotates together with a rod called an axle passing through it and thus allows heavy loads to be lifted with ease when an effort is applied on either of them.
Steering wheel, screwdriver, doorknob
The faster the axle spins, the faster the wheel turns.
-
Screw
-
-
Jar lid, screw, end of a light bulb
-
-
When the screw makes one full rotation, it advances the distance equal to space between two threads - pitch.
Pulley
-
-
A rope or chain passes through the wheel and one end of it is attached to the load and the other is pulled by us.
Single Fixed Pulley
-
-
Drawing water, raising or lowering flags, drawing curtains
-
Movable Pulley
-
-
In this type of pulley, a fixed pulley is present while another pulley that moves up and down with the load helps in easily lifting objects.
Cranes, modern elevators, weight lifting machines
Single Moveable pulley
One end of the rope is fixed to block and effort is at the other end. Load is attached to the pulley.
-
Care of Machines
-
Moving parts of a machine should be regularly lubricated to reduce friction, noise and wear and tear.
-
-
When not in use, it should be covered to protect from dust and moisture.
-
They are simple tools or devices that are made to help us do work easily and efficiently.
They are manually handled to do mechanical work.
-
-
-
A machine can only do work when work is done on it. For an ideal machine, work done by the machine is = work done on the machine.
