Natural Order Hypothesis

Characteristics: Sounds are acquired before others
Examples: Children acquire possessive "ing" and "s" before they can acquire third person "s" on verbs.

Structural Analysis
Definition: The process of breaking down words into parts to understand word meaning
Characteristics: three main word parts that are broken down in structural analysis: prefixes, roots, suffixes
Examples: bi- means two, -ist means a person who
Non-Examples: words without prefixes or suffixes, words that cannot be broken down to uncover meaning.
Polysyllabic Words
Definition: words with more than one syllable, comprised of prefixes, roots or bases, and suffixes.
Characteristics: Generally refers to words with three or more syllables. Vocabulary words in academic texts/ academic language. Many words that are from Greek and Latin.
Examples: intelligent, personification, fundamentally
Non-Examples: words with one syllable such as me, world, girl, boy, one
Syntactic Structure
Characteristics: Grammar rules, made of nouns, subject, verbs
Definition: Patterns of how sentences are formed from words

Non- Examples: words that do not create meaningful sentences, sentences without grammatical structure
